Important Facts and Information About Samui Island

Koh Samui is an island in Thailand located on Kra Isthmus’ east coast. The island is located near Surtat Thani which is a mainland town in Surat Thani Province. It is important to note that Koh Samui is sometimes referred to as Ko Samui or Samui. The island is the 3rd largest in Thailand after islands like Phuket and Ko Chang. Koh Samui Island boasts of attracting over 1.5million tourists yearly. The island measures 228.7 square kilometres. The local population is approximately 62,000. The main reason behind the islands popularity is the abundance of natural resources and scenery; the island has magnificent coral reefs and white sandy beaches.

Koh Samui History Island

Koh Samui’s existence dates back 15 centuries ago when the island was first inhabited. The original settlers of the island were believed to be fishermen from southern China and the Malay Peninsula. Koh Samui first appeared on Chinese maps in the late 1600’s. The Island was called Pulo Cornam at the time. People can only speculate about the origin of the name Samui. There is however an explanation that makes some sense i.e. the name Samui was coined from the name of a native tree called mui. The Koh or Ko means Island in Thai.ved to be self-sufficient with very little connection with other parts of Thailand. The island got its first road in the 1970’s. Before then, locals and tourists walked for 15 kilometers to cover the Islands mountainous central jungles.

Tourism

Samui Island has thrived because of tourism. For instance, resorts, luxury villas and bungalows on the island have been built solely to serve the tourists that visit the Island every year. Tourism is the main reasons why many businessmen from all corners of the world have flocked Samui to invest. There are currently over 260 luxury resorts and bungalows. This has made Samui Thailand’s 2nd largest resort center behind Bangkok.

Apart from the adequate luxurious accommodation, Samui Island attracts tourists because of having numerous festivals and events. For instance, festivals like buffalo fighting which are held on special occasions i.e. New Year attract very many tourists. It is important to note that the buffalo fighting festivals are harmless unlike the Spanish bull fighting festivals. Samui’s buffalo fighting festivals are simply meant for harmless entertainment. The buffaloes are decorated using gold painted leaves and ribbons. The festival is just meant to compare charging strength and aggressiveness of a given buffalo as opposed to the body damage inflicted.

Another popular event in Thailand is the Triathlon Event. This event is organized yearly by the ITU or International Triathlon Union. The Samui Art Party is another tourist attraction. The cultural event brings together both local and international art lovers. The event is held annually. It is hosted in high end resorts in Samui. The events focus in promoting the local art community in Samui. Another interesting event is the Samui Regatta. This event is basically a tournament for sailors. It attracts both foreign and local participation. Samui is simply one of the best Islands to visit in Thailand.

Wet Weather Weddings

During the Monsoon season (October to December), many people may not think Koh Samui is an ideal place to step into your future as Husband and Wife. While it is true the weather can be wet, it is not the constant storm that many guide books portray. In fact, some of the most beautiful weather I have ever experienced in my many years living here on Koh Samui have been in the Monsoon season. Here are a few other reasons why Koh Samui is still be a great place to get married, even if it is a little ‘wet’.

1. In Thailand water plays a large role in many of the Thai celebrations. If it’s wet on a wedding day, it is believed to both cleanse and purify the body and soul; allowing a marriage to begin fresh and new. The more water that passes over your skin on a day of celebration, the more purified you become. So if it happens to be a little wet on your wedding day, do what the Thai’s do and embrace it. If the weather is dry, ask about the “Rod Nam Sang” or Water Blessing if you want to guarantee this important tradition during your ceremony.

2. Koh Samui is a tropical island and therefore we have “wet” weather all year-round. No matter what month you visit, we often have afternoon rain-showers to cool things off. These showers usually last between 5 and 30 minutes, then disappear as if they never occurred, leaving wedding ceremonies to go ahead as planned.

3. Koh Samui can be considered more romantic during the ‘off-season’. There are always less people around at the resorts, beaches and restaurants so you always feel more intimate and private. You can enjoy the best views at dinner, the best rooms available and the best personal service while starting your new life together.

4. For those wanting an unforgettable beach wedding, but are on a budget; the lowest rates are available on most accommodations during the Monsoon season.

5. If you want to be sure you’re ‘covered’ – an outdoor marquee or canopy can be arranged to protect from all elements, while sea-side restaurants provide excellent alternative venues for severe weather.

When planning your wedding day, don’t let a little ‘wet weather’ dampen your spirits, it is unnecessary. Come to Koh Samui, relax and let the natural beauty of the island help make your wedding day unforgettable – no matter what the actual weather is like.

Choosing Your Destination Wedding Planner

Choosing the right wedding planner for your destination wedding on Koh Samui can be challenging. There are so many companies that are available on the internet and how do you know one company from the next? Here is a short list of things to consider when looking for your wedding planner on this beautiful tropical island.

Does the wedding planner live and work on Koh Samui or will you have to pay extra to have them fly in and organize your wedding? Having someone who lives and works on Koh Samui would be ideal as they will likely have the best contacts for everything you are looking for – not to mention they will save you money as they are already located on Koh Samui.

Is the wedding planner a knowledgeable, certified wedding professional or do they just help organize weddings? Having a certified wedding planner adds the benefit of professional skills that many other people would not have. Their specialized training can give you added assurance that they know what they are doing.

Does the wedding planner instill confidence in you, allowing you to relax knowing everything is being properly taken care of for you? Choosing the right company will allow you to enjoy more important things – like spending time with family and friends.

Does the wedding planner only work in the wedding business or is their attention split between other activities? When it comes to your wedding day consider having someone there who has planned and organized everything and is solely dedicated to weddings and giving you the most unforgettable memories. Knowing someone is there for you in every way will help you have the time of your life. Destination Wedding

Who will perform your marriage ceremony? There are several choices for wedding ceremonies on Koh Samui. The religious ceremonies have very little room for personalizing your wedding service as they tend to follow more traditional methods. A Celebrant is much more flexible than the others and allows for more creative freedom to have the exact ceremony you would like. A professional Celebrant would want to meet you when you arrive on Koh Samui to discuss the variety of ceremony options you have available and to finalize your choices. At the end of the day – the person who performs your ceremony is likely to be one of the most important aspects of your wedding day.

Is the wedding planner available to meet with you if you do come to Koh Samui to inspect the island? Are they happy to take you around and show you the available venues you can choose from? Is the planner professional and friendly? Destination Wedding

As you contact the various planners available on Koh Samui remember to ask lots of questions. Your wedding memories will ultimately be in their hands. You want your wedding day to be unforgettable for all the right reasons. Take the time to find the right company for you. Destination Wedding

Learning Thai Massage in Koh Samui

Marloas is nineteen years old and she comes from Rotterdam in Holland. She is in gap year from school and has taken the time to travel in Asia. She has been on the road for four months and as the trip winds to a close she has come to the Health Oasis Resort in Koh Samui to learn Thai massage.

“This is one of the best things I did on my trip,’ she enthuses. “While I was traveling I had massages. It felt so nice that I decided I would like to learn how to do it!”

“It’s just for fun. I have learned it for myself and to help my friends and family.”

No, she does not want to become a massage therapist. Her goal is to train as a medical doctor, and this preparation in massage could well help her in her aspiration to study western medicine.

Her twenty-hour course stretched over a leisurely five and a half days. So she has plenty of time for rest and relaxation in the swimming pool and on the beach beside. She laughs when she says, “I enjoyed the rest!”

“I also really liked the Course with Thai instructor Nan.”

Nan, by the way started her studies at the prestigious Wat Pho in Bangkok which serves as the premier massage teaching facility in Thailand.

“She really gets the students to practice a lot. She’s very kind and supportive, too and that helped a whole lot!” Says the young Dutch student.

“She taught me to apply my whole body in making the massage strokes.”

Marloas explains she was always afraid that her hands would become tired whilst massaging, but she was surprised to find that instead she felt energised.

“I now know the pressure points and understand how to make people relax.”

The course that Marloas attended is not designed to turn out professional therapists. It is certificated but is designed for self-development and general interest. For those eager to learn Thai massage for professional use, Health Oasis Resort offers a more intensive fifty hour period of instruction, and this too comes with a certificate.

Massage is one of several subjects that visitors can learn at the Bang Po beach side resort. Other topics include Thai Cookery, Reiki, Meditation and EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique. The Thai cooking is interesting because it is geared very much to the visitor to the Kingdom. Many people have enjoyed eating Thai food in restaurants worldwide and on coming to Thailand have taken the experience to another dimension. What Health Oasis encourages is to teach visitors how to cook their favourite dishes. Naturally this requires a little notice because the instructors have to go to the market and buy the freshest ingredients possible so the ‘trainee chef’ can prepare that favourite meal. Once you have cooked it, all you then have is the pleasure of sitting down and eating your creation and hopefully you have invited some friends or loved ones to share this unique experience with you.
