The Thai island of Koh Samui Beaches is renowned for its picture-perfect white sand beaches, some of which provide every imaginable facility, while others are secluded enough to offer privacy and romance. Coconut palms sway over powder-soft sand, spotless waters lap invitingly at visitors’ feet. The beaches of Koh Samui provide the opportunity to have you hair braided, obtain a massage, dine on barbecued chicken or just spend an afternoon’s leisure, drink in hand. If water sports suit your fancy, diving, sailing and many activities are also on offer.

Chaweng Beach is Koh Samui’s biggest and busiest beach, offering a variety of entertainment and leisure options not found elsewhere on the island. Chaweng offers a mesmerizing assortment of restaurants and bars to suit every taste. Its famed Green Mango strip offers a multitude of nightlife options, from dance bars to pubs, attracting a host of visitors and fashionable locals alike. Chaweng’s three kilometer main strip also offers quieter, less lively venues for an afternoon’s relaxation.Samui Beaches

Lamai Beach is Koh Samui’s next largest development, also offering a variety of entertainment options, albeit with a somewhat more sedate ambience. Less frenetic and quieter than Chaweng, Lamai’s establishments are generally somewhat older, and therefore less expensive. Nonetheless there are a great many cafes and nightlife venues to explore, as well as spas and other tourist attractions.Samui Beaches

Maenam Beach On the other hand Maenam Beach’s superb views and rambling pathways attract many backpackers and tourists on a budget, additionally offering a greater degree of privacy due to its laidback character.

Bophut Beach includes a stretch of sand extending for several kilometers as well as the quaint Fisherman’s Village, which occupies the beach’s central section. Fisherman’s Village has acquired renown as the best-preserved and most elegant part of the island. A variety of shops invite the visitor, among them boutiques offering quality jewellery and clothing.

To experience luxury spa treatments at Koh Samui, the ideal choice would be the Chuan Spa at Langham Place Samui at Lamai Beach, one of the day spas which offers exceptional quality treatments.Samui Beaches

Koh Samui Waterfalls, a Natural Wonder Na Muang

Thailand has over the years acquired a reputation as a country rich in both natural and manmade attractions.Na Muang

Na muang waterfall samui waterfall

Na muang waterfall samui waterfall

The waterfalls of Koh Samui in Thailand have gained renown as delightfully picturesque natural formations which never fail to captivate the visitor. Many travellers from abroad as well as Thais visit the scenic falls to experience the beauty and glory of this natural setting away from the hustle and bustle of the urban areas. Each of the different waterfalls has its own distinctive charm, making each a delightful spectacle.Na Muang

One of the most famed waterfalls in the region is the Na Muang 1 Waterfall which is noted for its convenient accessibility and beautiful recreational area where visitors may choose to have a swim. The base of the falls may be reached via a somewhat challenging but visually appealing stairway provided by the rock formations at the site. However the visitor must take care when treading on the rocks concealed by the foam of the waterfall. The surreal atmosphere of this lovely site is completed by the view of the nearby elephant trails where pachyderms can be seen lumbering over downstream waters carrying intrigued tourists.

However the distinction of being Koh Samui’s loveliest waterfall is usually accorded to the Na Muang 2 Waterfall. The sight of this marvel of nature in radiant sunshine with its lush surroundings and amazing rock formations is one that will never be forgotten. A refreshing ten minute walk which adds to the fun must be undertaken to reach the site. The visitor would do well to bring a camera and a snack; souvenirs also may be purchased nearby.

Hin Lad Waterfall enjoys a special status as the least visited waterfall in Koh Samui, largely because a 2 kilometre walk is needed to reach it, but this only enhances the pristine beauty of the location. The invigorating walk lies along a captivating jungle path, and travellers may refresh themselves with a swim in the waterfall’s pool. It is advisable to bring a drink and a snack, and you should allow plenty of time to take in the sights of the area.

Meanwhile the Wang Saotong is a relatively tall waterfall and a visit to its appealing environs entails a 1 kilometre walk to reach the falls. The glorious surroundings and mesmerizing murmur of the waters make for a delightful afternoon’s relaxation in the midst of nature

Ferry to Koh Samui 1981

This journal wrote by  NAOMI LINDT  her story and experience which no one will never ever met.

30 years ago, there were no travel guides like Lonely Planet assisting travellers to find remote exotic islands. One knew about Koh Samui simply by word of mouth. To get to the southern island in the Gulf of Siam, most people took the train from Bangkok to Surat Thani and then local transport to the pier. The few ferries that operated then, were converted fishing boats, used mainly by the local people. Koh Samui airport wasn’t built until late ‘80s.

When we first arrived on Samui Island in 1981, there was only one road around the island – the rest were merely dirt tracks meandering between coconut palms, island homes and small beachfront bungalows. The main transport around the island were pickup trucks and motorbikes.

Big Buddha 1981

At the time, Koh Samui was mainly inhabited by southern Thais who made their living primarily from coconuts and fishing. There were also plenty of entertaining working gibbons who often woke me up during coconut harvesting time. The islanders spoke a delightful dialect, often singing in the form of rhymes; terribly difficult for me to understand since my ear was used to hearing the short clipped northern accent associated with Lampang. No one could speak English. Overall, the locals were extremely friendly. Every time I returned to the island, they would happily run up and greet me with the fond and respectful “Ajan!! Ajan!!” (“teacher, teacher”) – always amused me as I was only a young postgraduate anthropology researcher at the time.

In the ‘80s, Koh Samui did not have full time electricity and thus no air conditioning, spas, pools, fans, dvds or even nightclubs. After spending all day on the beach, evening entertainment was simply enjoying a home cooked meal at one of the open-air beach cafes and meeting up with the occasional traveller. We always carried a small collection of cassettes with us that bungalow owners encouraged us to play. Small generators ran enough power for some evening use – mainly to light up the cafes at nights. There were no Thai Rastas or Reggae bars at that time, only the occasional cock fight for the locals.

During those holidays, I remember always having to stock up on plenty of candles, mosquito coils and batteries for the torch before the power was switched off before midnight. Most of the resorts had only one large share toilet and shower block for all guests. It was fine. They were always clean. Life was certainly cheap back then! Simple bamboo beachfront bungalows on stilts at Cheweng Beach were only 20 THB a night! A meal consisting of fresh grilled fish, a plate of french fries cooked in fresh coconut oil, salad and a bottle of beer for a mere 30 Baht.

I was most fortunate to spend many of my holidays on Koh Samui during this time. Looking back, I feel it was Koh Samui’s heyday as an idyllic peaceful island paradise, both for the locals and the few tourists.

Koh Samui has moved on since the ’80s. It was added to the list of the New York Times top 41 places to visit in 2011.

Koh Samui, Thailand – A toned-down version of Phuket, heavy on wellness and food.

“As Thailand’s third-largest island, Koh Samui isn’t exactly off the radar. But the 95-square-mile tropical gem in the southern Gulf of Thailand, whose white sand beaches, abundant coral reefs and seas of palm trees were once a backpackers’ secret, has emerged as the stylish luxury alternative to crowded Phuket. Last month’s much-anticipated opening of the W Retreat Koh Samui on a private beach along the island’s northern shore was the chic hotel brand’s premiere in Southeast Asia. July saw the arrival of the 78 pool-villas at the Banyan Tree Samui and its bay-facing spa, which includes the island’s first hydrotherapy facility. It is burnishing Koh Samui’s reputation as one of Thailand’s top wellness destinations, along with the yoga and detox center at the Moroccan-inspired boutique resort Absolute Sanctuary, which turns three in April.

Local restaurants have kept pace, luring international chefs who are transforming Koh Samui into an eating destination as well. Newcomers include H-Bistro at the Hansar Samui resort, where the French-Mediterranean and Thai menu was conceived by a former private chef to the Jordanian royal family, and Orgasmic by Chef Wally, which serves innovative cocktails and dishes like cocoa butter Hokkaido scallops and freshly caught white snapper with pecan-celery mash. The local scene goes into full swing at the weekly Sunday Sessions under the soaring thatched roofs at loungey Beach Republic, whose brunch, seafood barbecue and sunset D.J.’s are quickly becoming famous. ”

Its main statue is not of Gautama Buddha but of Guanyin, the “goddess” of compassion and mercy. The statue is in Chinese style, with 18 arms, and though open-air located within an elaborate ubusot is on a platform-pavilion surrounded by the temple lake. The temple’s design, though modern, incorporates elements of Chinese and Thai traditions and was in part designed by distinguished Thai artist Jarit Phumdonming. In addition to the main Guanyin statue, there is also a white laughing Buddha statue.
